I just realized recently that I was spending to much time on it. I got sucked in, but I wasn't playing games on it and doing the ridiculous things my peers were doing so I justified myself. The demon in her proclaimed Paul et al to be servants of the Lord, "who proclaim to you the way of salvation." What could be wrong with that? Except she kept it up ad nauseum, until Paul grew weary of it. Casting out her demon meant she couldn't earn her keepers any more money! This act caused them to be drug before the rulers, beaten and imprisoned. I like the way the Lord uses it for good, however. It was awesome that when the magistrates set them free by word of the jailor, an (indignant?) Paul sent word back that they should come themselves to free them!Dianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07790147694434288643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15007144.post-57725204219050329772009-06-13T09:37:55.014-07:002009-06-13T09:37:55.014-07:00I have been doing some reading on the Reformation ...I have been doing some reading on the Reformation over the past few months, and there are some marked similarities. The corrupt officials of the church, concerning themselves not as much with salvation and eternity as with retaining power on Earth, but being afraid to put down the upstart movement through open violence for fear of the people (v.26). I am interested in these cases where the common people seem to be the tool that God uses in order to protect and foster His true church. Examples of this can be found several times in the Gospels that we just read as well, where the established church leaders wanted to put Jesus to death much earlier, but were afraid of the people's response if they did. The hasmonean revolt also started among the hasidim, the pious, faithful people. I wonder if this might not be a great argument for the Congregational form of church government, which also formed as a result of the Reformation. The common, humble people of God's church seem often to be more sensitive to His leading than those who are used to being in authority. Clearly, there are strong leaders needed as well, but they are chosen by the people rather than by a grand council of those who are used to making such decisions on everyone's behalf.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15007144.post-51833164112985605132009-06-12T10:25:18.764-07:002009-06-12T10:25:18.764-07:00Good stuff. Interesting that no one dared to associate them, a bit like the mountain where God was that only Moses dared to ascend as the people hung back in fear of such a powerful God. They sent him up there as a sort of priest, but Peter states that as Christians we are a 'Kingdom of Priests, a Holy Nation'. That seems like how the young Peter-led church was too, but the requirement was that they not lie to God.

Was this church the ideal, to be emulated? It seems very similar to the oneness described by John in John 17 and in Revelation when he describes the temple, with each member as a pillar. I tend to think that marriage might be the only relationship that comes close to this kind of unity, but it would be awesome if the church today could somehow resemble this.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15007144.post-25411814604863496522009-06-12T08:18:53.422-07:002009-06-12T08:18:53.422-07:00This incident reminds one of the period when the c...This incident reminds one of the period when the children of Israel were in the wilderness and just entering the promised land (Korah, the man with the Midianite woman, and Achan are examples). It seems like God was not very tolerant of greed and deception then either, as though He did not want the heightened sense of unity among His people defiled by the presence of a tare among the wheat.

I agree that the particular sin seems to be less about the tithing issue, and more about deception..which we already know God hates from the passages about the 'shortened ephah' in Amos 8 and Micah 6: "Can I justify wicked scales and a bag of deceptive weights...so also I will make you sick, striking you down, desolating you because of your sins"

God certainly sent a message about His foundling Church, that the former guile of Jacob did not belong among them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15007144.post-36883954912151606272009-05-08T13:03:00.000-07:002009-05-08T13:03:00.000-07:00This is a fascinating question. They were not unusual in this regard. John 6:44 and John 6:45 both are very clear about this. I don't care about the bar fight, but always dwell on the separation between the Father and Son. I guess being apart from each other was something I could at least kind of get my mind around. But separation due to sin is so un-understandable; the perfection vs the failure. I don't know anything about perfection and can't really fathom holiness. I'll have to think about this some more. Thanks for the answer.Tiffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04454218964486583302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15007144.post-30023947082773824892009-05-06T09:36:00.000-07:002009-05-06T09:36:00.000-07:00Tiff, Great and classic question. It was not necessarily ongoing while his body was in the grave.

Hebrews 2:14 & 1 John 3:8 tells us that Jesus destroyed the work of the devil through his life and death. That does not necessitate him going physically to hell and pounding him like they were in a bar fight.

I think the thing that makes the best sense of all the evidence is that Jesus died (was separated from God). Once he died he went to paradise, as did the thief. 2 Cor. 5:6-8 tells us this would be normal for believers, too.

Great questions.RevReavhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07318173464349787041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15007144.post-70352727943439673532009-05-06T09:13:00.000-07:002009-05-06T09:13:00.000-07:00v43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, tod...v43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." So, what was Jesus doing between crucifixion and the resurrection?
